McLean Local Insider: What Longtime Residents Know

Last updated October 15, 2026. Short facts residents pass along, each checked against an official source.

  • A railroad town without a railroad: the electric Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad ran through McLean from 1906 until 1934, and Old Dominion Drive follows its old rail bed.
  • Named for a publisher: by 1910 the area took the name of John R. McLean, a railroad owner and publisher of the Washington Post.
  • A presidential refuge, reputedly: the Salona marker says the estate’s owner reputedly sheltered President James Madison in 1814 as the British burned Washington, and Union troops camped there in the winter of 1861 to 1862.
  • The Old Firehouse: the McLean Volunteer Fire Department incorporated in 1923; its 1948 station on Chain Bridge Road later became the McLean Community Center’s teen center, the Old Firehouse Center.
  • Eight bridges at one crossing: eight bridges have stood at Chain Bridge since 1797, and the current one dates to 1939 (Arlington Public Library).
  • Virginia’s first Byway: Georgetown Pike was named the state’s first Virginia Byway in 1974.

What It’s Like to Live in McLean

Short answer: McLean is a close-in, mostly single-family part of Fairfax County where the Potomac parks, the GW Parkway and Chain Bridge sit on one side and Tysons’ high-rises and Silver Line stations on the other.

Not a town. McLean has no town government. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors handles zoning and services, and McLean is in the Dranesville District, represented by Supervisor Jimmy Bierman. The one McLean-only layer is the McLean Community Center’s special tax district (Small District 1A), which funds the center and its Alden Theatre at $0.023 per $100 of assessed value.

How it got its name. A Fairfax County History Commission marker at Old Dominion Drive and Chain Bridge Road says the community grew up after the electric Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad began running in 1906, and that by 1910 the area was renamed for John R. McLean, an owner of the railroad and publisher of the Washington Post. Trains stopped in 1934, and the rail bed is now Old Dominion Drive.

Downtown. The roughly 230-acre McLean Community Business Center has its own county plan, adopted June 22, 2021, aimed at a more walkable, mixed-use center. More in McLean neighborhoods explained.

McLean Communities and Neighborhoods

McLean’s place names are neighborhoods, not towns, and each works differently. Nikki works these neighborhoods regularly and can tell you what each one is like day to day:

  • Downtown McLean: the roughly 230-acre McLean Community Business Center around Chain Bridge Road, Old Dominion Drive and Elm Street, home to the McLean Community Center, Langley Shopping Center and new apartment projects.
  • Langley: one of McLean’s oldest place names, on the east side around Route 123 and Georgetown Pike, closest to the GW Parkway and Chain Bridge.
  • Chesterbrook: the southeast side along Old Dominion Drive, around the Chesterbrook Shopping Center, toward the Arlington line.
  • Lewinsville and Spring Hill: central and west McLean around Lewinsville Park and Spring Hill Road, where new infill subdivisions are still being approved.
  • West McLean and the Tysons edge: between the Beltway and Tysons, close to the McLean and Tysons Silver Line stations; many addresses here read “McLean, VA 22102.”

Listings also use subdivision names such as Salona Village, Franklin Park and Rock Spring. Compare them side by side, with what to check before buying in each, in McLean neighborhoods explained.

McLean Housing Market Snapshot

McLean market data, three months ending September 2026 (Redfin):

  • Median days on market: 38, compared with 40 a year earlier

By price range (Bright MLS active and coming-soon listings in ZIP codes 22101 and 22102, Oct. 15, 2026): 195 listings under $2 million (median asking price $699,900), 47 from $2 million to $3 million (median $2,690,000, about 6,000 sq. ft.), 54 from $3 million to $5 million (median $3,999,000, about 8,000 sq. ft.) and 42 at $5 million and up (median $7,495,888, about 10,550 sq. ft.). McLean Buyer Due-Diligence Checklist

Before you write an offer in McLean, Nikki’s buyers check these items for the specific address:

  • Zoning and lot rules: confirm the zoning district; in the R-1 district the minimum lot area is 36,000 square feet. This matters if you plan to add on, rebuild or subdivide.
  • Rebuild rules: new homes and large additions that disturb more than 2,500 square feet need an infill lot grading plan, plus a review for the county’s 10-year tree canopy requirement. See buying or building in McLean.
  • Streams and floodplains: check the county’s Resource Protection Area guidance map and FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center.
  • Taxes: for tax year 2026 Fairfax County’s rates per $100 of assessed value are $1.12 (base), $0.0325 (stormwater), $0.001 (infestation prevention) and $0.023 for the McLean Community Center district. Check the home’s assessment on the county’s real estate tax rates page.
  • What’s planned nearby: search nearby parcels in the county’s PLUS portal, and read the McLean CBC plan or the Tysons Comprehensive Plan if the home is near downtown or the Silver Line. See the development tracker.
  • Utilities: confirm public water and sewer versus a private well and septic system.
  • Road work: the Dulles Toll Road bridge over Route 123 is under construction until early 2028; drive the commute at rush hour.
  • Schools: confirm assignments for the exact address in the FCPS boundary locator.

McLean Schools: Fairfax County Public Schools

Homes with a McLean address are served by Fairfax County Public Schools, and school assignment depends on the exact property address. Boundaries can change from year to year, so confirm the assigned schools for any specific address directly with the school system:

Military Relocation Realtor – Northern Virginia PCS Specialist

Expert Buyer's Realtor in McLean, VA

Finding a home in McLean means moving fast and knowing the real value behind the asking price. As your buyer’s realtor, Nikki Lagouros provides buyer’s realtor services built around how McLean actually sells: quick decisions backed by real comps, not guesswork.

From the first call, Nikki listens to what you actually need before she sends you a single listing. Whether that’s an estate lot in West McLean, a townhome near Tysons, or something walkable to downtown, she narrows the search to houses worth your time.

She also handles the parts buyers tend to dread: the mortgage pre-approval logistics, writing a competitive offer without overpaying, and negotiating repairs after inspection. Her buyers get straight answers, not a sales pitch, all the way through closing.

Professional Listing Realtor in McLean, VA

Selling a home means getting it off the market fast and for the right price, and that takes more than a sign in the yard. With years of experience as a top listing realtor, Nikki Lagouros brings the pricing strategy, prep work, and marketing that actually moves a McLean listing.

Before your home hits the market, Nikki walks the property with you and tells you what’s worth fixing and what isn’t. Professional photography is standard, not an upsell. Pricing is set from real comparable sales in your specific neighborhood, not a formula, because a pricing mistake costs more in McLean than it does somewhere cheaper.

Marketing runs through the MLS, targeted online placement, and her own buyer network, so your listing reaches people actually looking in McLean, not just anyone scrolling nearby.

Her marketing strategy was top-notch—professional photography and a well-priced listing led to the most rewarding outcome: five offers in just five days! When we decided to sell our home, we spent several weeks analyzing the data available on the top selling agents in our area. We narrowed our options down to a short list of three. During a series of face-to-face interviews Nikki Lagouros quickly emerged as the front-runner and also the best choice for our family. Here are a few highlights from our experience. Nikki is an extremely adept listener. She was completely respectful of our personal priorities in the selling process. From start to finish Nikki did not pressure or disregard us. Throughout the process Nikki's response time was exceptional. Initially, she was the only realtor that personally answered the phone. (All others went to voicemail.) From that time on, Nikki responded within 2 hours of a reach from one of us. When she was going to be unable to respond in that timeframe she told us beforehand. Nikki put together a shared document with detailed timelines and expectations for all parties involved in our sale, including us. Then she managed all parties. We did not have to inquire once about expectations or timeframes. Nor did her team ever fail to deliver by the timeline set. Nikki is smart! and current in the strategies she used to help position our house to sell. For instance, she is adept at employing the emerging online marketing strategies related to selling homes. Additionally, she increased the strength and personal feel to the narrative describing our home by inviting us to help craft it. Finally, Nikki's team is like her~ each member is committed, focused, respectful, kind and highly relational. They were fun to be around; a rarity when selling a home. We had multiple offers and sold quickly! From start to finish Nikki Lagouros exceeded our expectations. We encourage anyone looking to sell (in Brambleton especially) to consider her as well!

We were looking for a realtor that truly understood our local market, and could help us navigate the home sale process. Well, we discovered that they don’t call Nikki “The Best Reston Agent” for no reason! She made some recommendations for a few updates. She then provided us with trusted contacts to take care of everything for us. We appreciated that she even had someone on her team to handle everything with our HOA, and to help stage our home! The photos were beautiful! We had several offers by day 2 of going live. We feel blessed because Nikki and her team went well above and beyond our expectations. We highly recommend her!

When you don't know anyone in the area, you hope to find someone as great as Nikki. I had to quickly get from TX to VA to take care of family matters and part of that was unexpectedly selling a family home. I'm a particular person when it comes to getting results, so after putting out an agent form in local Reston groups, getting tons of submissions, and narrowing it down to 5 interviews, I was happy to encounter Nikki. Her degrees in Consumer Psychology and Marketing sold me. As much I appreciate over-communication, I appreciate results more - and she made it happen. We were thrilled with the outcome, the multiple offers, and the ease that she created for us since we had to be back in Texas before the home even hit the market. She, Laura, and George took care of everything in a timely manner, keeping me updated on relevant changes, and providing all the info upfront so I could make a decision quickly without having to ask additional questions. She's #1 for a reason. Her strategy is top notch, her staging is stunning, and her recommendations are trustworthy. I'll recommend her to anyone I know needing an agent in the area. Thank you for being amazing, Nikki.

Working with Nikki was nothing short of amazing 🙌 From day one, her knowledge and guidance were unmatched. We originally planned to buy new construction in Woodbridge, but decided to wait and purchase locally in the Springfield/Alexandria area later this year—and Nikki supported us every step of the way. Even in a short time, she proved she truly cares and always puts her clients first 💯 Come August… we’re coming back and closing our dream home with her 🏡✨ Stay tuned 👀 And thank you, Nikki—we’re blessed to have found you!

We cannot say enough great things about Nikki and her team! From initial contact all the way through signing closing documents and receiving our keys, Nikki was fantastic in our home buying journey. She took the time to listen to every single concern, no matter how small. As we were new to the area, she patiently showed us not only property listings, but the highlights that the various neighborhoods had to offer. When it came time to put in an offer, Nikki ensured we stayed competitive the whole way through, fighting for us (oh, and we got the house). Call Nikki!! You will not regret it.
