Quick Answer: How Do McLean’s Neighborhoods Differ?

Last updated October 15, 2026.

Quick answer: McLean is unincorporated Fairfax County, so “Langley,” “Chesterbrook” and “West McLean” are place names, not towns. Downtown McLean is the roughly 230-acre Community Business Center around Chain Bridge Road and Old Dominion Drive; Langley and Chesterbrook are the mostly single-family east and southeast sides closest to Chain Bridge and the GW Parkway; and West McLean runs up to Tysons, where both Silver Line stations named McLean and Tysons sit and many addresses read “McLean, VA 22102.”

Downtown McLean

Downtown McLean is the McLean Community Business Center (CBC), an area of about 230 acres. The Board of Supervisors adopted an updated plan for it on June 22, 2021, with recommendations for a more walkable, mixed-use center. The McLean Community Center and its 383-seat Alden Theatre are at 1234 Ingleside Avenue, Langley Shopping Center sits along Chain Bridge Road, and Mars Inc. is finishing a renovation of its headquarters at 6885 Elm Street.

The community grew up here after the electric Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad began running in 1906; by 1910 the area was renamed for John R. McLean, an owner of the railroad and publisher of the Washington Post. Train service ended in 1934, and the rail bed is now Old Dominion Drive (Fairfax County History Commission marker).

What to know before buying here:

  • Downtown is changing. The county approved a 56-unit apartment building at 1368 Beverly Road in March 2026, and a 115-unit building has been proposed at 6816 and 6824 Elm Street. See the development tracker.
  • Homes just outside the CBC can sit next to future redevelopment; check the county’s PLUS portal for zoning applications near the address.
  • There is no Metrorail station downtown; the closest are the McLean and Tysons stations on Route 123.

Langley

Langley is one of McLean’s oldest place names. The Salona historical marker notes that the land was part of Thomas Lee’s 1719 grant known as Langley, and the McLean marker describes the railroad crossing Chain Bridge Road “between the villages of Lewinsville and Langley.” Today the name covers the east side of McLean around Route 123 and Georgetown Pike, close to the GW Parkway and Chain Bridge.

What to know before buying here:

  • Georgetown Pike (Route 193) was named Virginia’s first Virginia Byway in 1974, so expect a narrow, winding, tree-lined road rather than a commuter arterial.
  • Check each parcel’s zoning district. In the R-1 district the minimum lot area is 36,000 square feet, which affects what can be built or subdivided.
  • Stream valleys and wooded lots can bring Resource Protection Area limits and tree rules; see buying or building in McLean.

Chesterbrook

Chesterbrook is the southeast side of McLean along Old Dominion Drive, around the Chesterbrook Shopping Center at 6224 Old Dominion Drive. Route 123, Chain Bridge and the GW Parkway are the main ways into D.C. from this side of McLean, and the Arlington County line is close by.

What to know before buying here:

  • Confirm permits for past additions and renovations in Fairfax County’s permit records before you rely on listed square footage.
  • School assignments can change street by street; check the FCPS boundary locator for the exact address.
  • Commute times into D.C. vary widely with Chain Bridge and Parkway traffic; test the drive at rush hour.

Lewinsville and Spring Hill

Lewinsville is another of the old village names on Chain Bridge Road. Lewinsville Park (1659 Chain Bridge Road) hosts the Fairfax County Park Authority’s McLean Farmers Market on Fridays (May 1 to Oct. 30 in 2026, 8 a.m. to noon) and the McLean Day festival each May. Toward the west, Spring Hill Road runs toward the Dulles Toll Road and Tysons.

What to know before buying here:

  • New infill is coming: in March 2026 the Board of Supervisors approved Spring Hill Reserve, 14 single-family houses on four parcels at 1336 to 1348 Spring Hill Road.
  • On McLean Day in May, parking at Lewinsville Park is not available and Fairfax Connector has run free shuttles from nearby lots (2026).
  • Homes near the Dulles Toll Road should be visited at different times of day for road noise.

West McLean, Tysons and What a 22102 Address Means

Tysons is not a separate town either, but Fairfax County plans it as its own urban center. The Tysons Comprehensive Plan envisions up to 100,000 residents and 200,000 jobs by 2050. Many Tysons addresses still read “McLean, VA 22102”: WMATA lists the McLean station at 1824 Dolley Madison Boulevard and the Tysons station at 1944 Chain Bridge Road, both with McLean 22102 addresses.

What to know before buying here:

  • A McLean mailing address does not tell you which planning area a home is in. Check whether it falls inside the Tysons plan area, where high-rise redevelopment is expected.
  • Tysons is adding thousands of homes; see the development tracker for projects near Route 123 and the Silver Line.
  • Eastbound Dulles Toll Road traffic is in a lane split at Route 123 until early 2028 while VDOT rebuilds the bridge.

McLean or Great Falls?

Great Falls Park uses a McLean mailing address through the National Park Service, but the park itself sits in the Great Falls area of Fairfax County, upriver from McLean. The McLean Community Center’s tax district uses the Potomac River, the Arlington County line and Difficult Run as boundaries on three sides, one practical way to see where “McLean” ends and Great Falls begins. More in the river parks guide.

McLean Neighborhoods FAQ

Is Tysons part of McLean?

Not for planning purposes. Fairfax County plans Tysons as its own urban center under the Tysons Comprehensive Plan, but many Tysons addresses, including the McLean and Tysons Metro stations, use a McLean, VA 22102 mailing address.

Does downtown McLean have a Metro station?

No. The closest Metrorail stations are McLean, at 1824 Dolley Madison Boulevard, and Tysons, at 1944 Chain Bridge Road, both on the Silver Line along Route 123.

Where is Langley in McLean?

Langley is an older place name for the east side of McLean around Route 123 and Georgetown Pike. A Fairfax County History Commission marker says the land was part of a 1719 grant known as Langley.

What ZIP codes does McLean use?

McLean addresses use 22101 and 22102. ZIP 22102 also covers parts of Tysons, so a McLean mailing address does not by itself tell you which planning area a home is in.

How do I check what is planned near a McLean home?

Search the address in Fairfax County’s PLUS portal for zoning applications, review the McLean Community Business Center plan if the home is near downtown, and check the Tysons Comprehensive Plan if it is near the Silver Line.
