Quick Answer: What Is It Like Living in Burke, VA?

Last updated October 17, 2026.

Quick answer: Burke is an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, so there is no town government or town tax: Fairfax County provides local services, and homes pay the county real estate tax of $1.12 per $100 of assessed value for fiscal year 2027. Burke is best known for Burke Centre, a 1,700-acre planned community of 5,862 homes run by the Burke Centre Conservancy, and for older subdivisions such as Kings Park and Kings Park West along Braddock Road. Two Virginia Railway Express stations, Burke Centre and Rolling Road, offer weekday trains toward Alexandria, Crystal City and Union Station, and the Fairfax County Parkway and Braddock Road carry most car traffic. Burke Lake Park, the 888-acre county park with a 218-acre lake, sits just south in Fairfax Station, and George Mason University’s Fairfax campus is about 4.5 miles north of Burke Centre.

Over the three months ending September 2026, Redfin reported a median sale price of about $775,000 in Burke, down 2.3% from a year earlier, with homes selling in about 30 days.

Overview and history

Burke takes its name from Silas Burke (1796 to 1854), a farmer, merchant and local official who donated right-of-way to the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The railroad reached the area in 1851, the stop became Burke’s Station, a post office followed in 1852, and the post office name was shortened to “Burke” in 1903, according to the Virginia Railway Express. Passenger trains stopped calling at Burke in 1967. Kings Park, the first large subdivision nearby, was built beginning in 1960, and planned communities such as Burke Centre followed over the next two decades. VRE brought commuter rail back in June 1992. See all areas Nikki serves, or the nearby Fairfax guide.

Burke Local Insider: What Longtime Residents Know

Last updated October 17, 2026. Short facts residents pass along, each checked against a public source.

Local insider cards:

  • No town hall: Burke is not an incorporated town. Fairfax County runs local government, and the county’s FY 2027 real estate tax rate is $1.12 per $100 of assessed value.
  • Burke’s Station: on Dec. 28, 1862, Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart raided the railroad station here and sent a telegram to the Union quartermaster general complaining about the quality of the captured mules, according to VRE’s history of the station.
  • Almost an airport: in 1959 the federal government advertised an auction of land it had assembled for an international airport at Burke, according to the Braddock District’s heritage archive. Washington’s new airport was built at Chantilly instead, and the same archive says Burke Lake Park was later created on part of that land.
  • Burke Centre by the numbers: 1,700 acres, 5,862 homes, five neighborhoods (Commons, Landings, Oaks, Ponds and Woods), 65 clusters, more than 30 miles of paths, six ponds, one lake and five community pools, according to the Burke Centre Conservancy.
  • “Lake Royal” or Royal Lake: locals and some county notices say Lake Royal; the Park Authority’s name is Royal Lake Park, a 46-acre park near Guinea Road and Burke Road with a J-shaped, 38-acre lake. New and repaved trails around the lake were finished in fall 2026.
  • The train came back: VRE opened Burke Centre station in June 1992 and added its structured parking garage in 2008.

Burke Is Unincorporated Fairfax County: What That Means

Short answer: every Burke home is governed by Fairfax County, but the mailing name, the association and some services change from street to street.

  • Taxes: Fairfax County’s FY 2027 real estate tax rate is $1.12 per $100 of assessed value, adopted May 5, 2026. There is no added town tax.
  • Mailing names: Burke-area addresses can read Burke, Fairfax, Fairfax Station or Springfield. Burke Lake Park itself has a Fairfax Station address, and Royal Lake Park has a Fairfax address. A Fairfax mailing address does not put a home in the City of Fairfax; see Fairfax City vs. Fairfax County.
  • Associations: Burke Centre homes belong to the Burke Centre Conservancy and a cluster association. Kings Park and Kings Park West have voluntary civic associations, and some sections of Kings Park West also have a mandatory homeowners association.
  • Trash: in Burke Centre, trash removal is billed by the Conservancy as a pass-through cost. Elsewhere, ask the seller or association who collects trash.

Burke Communities and Neighborhoods: Which One Fits?

A quick summary, with a “what to know before buying here” box for each in Burke neighborhoods compared:

  • Burke Centre: a 1,700-acre planned residential community of 5,862 homes in five neighborhoods and 65 clusters, with five pools, more than 30 miles of paths and its own VRE station. Owners pay a Conservancy general assessment of $180 per quarter in 2026, plus a cluster assessment. See the Burke Centre Conservancy guide.
  • Kings Park: the area’s first large subdivision, built beginning in 1960, with entrances on Braddock Road. Its voluntary civic association runs community events and maintains the entrance landscaping, and the neighborhood has its own shopping center and the Kings Park Library. A privately owned swim club is open to members.
  • Kings Park West: a separate subdivision of 1,879 residences. The civic association is voluntary ($25 a year); the Kings Park West Community Association, created by builder Richmarr in 1975, is a homeowners association of 580 homes sharing about 43 acres of common land.
  • Near Burke Lake Park: homes closest to the park are a short drive from its 4.7-mile lake trail, and some carry Fairfax Station addresses like the park itself.
  • Other subdivisions: Burke includes many smaller subdivisions, some with their own homeowners associations and some with none. Confirm the association for the exact address.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have had Ms. Nikki Lagouros help us sell our home. Recommended by our financial advisor, she stepped in when we decided to move on relatively short notice. Nikki provided excellent advice on which improvements to prioritize and how to stage the home to attract buyers. She also went above and beyond by connecting us with trusted contacts for our move and clearing-out services. Her marketing strategy was top-notch—professional photography and a well-priced listing led to the most rewarding outcome: five offers in just five days! We are absolutely thrilled with her work and wholeheartedly recommend Nikki to anyone planning to sell their house.

When we decided to sell our home, we spent several weeks analyzing the data available on the top selling agents in our area. We narrowed our options down to a short list of three. During a series of face-to-face interviews Nikki Lagouros quickly emerged as the front-runner and also the best choice for our family. Here are a few highlights from our experience. Nikki is an extremely adept listener. She was completely respectful of our personal priorities in the selling process. From start to finish Nikki did not pressure or disregard us. Throughout the process Nikki's response time was exceptional. Initially, she was the only realtor that personally answered the phone. (All others went to voicemail.) From that time on, Nikki responded within 2 hours of a reach from one of us. When she was going to be unable to respond in that timeframe she told us beforehand. Nikki put together a shared document with detailed timelines and expectations for all parties involved in our sale, including us. Then she managed all parties. We did not have to inquire once about expectations or timeframes. Nor did her team ever fail to deliver by the timeline set. Nikki is smart! and current in the strategies she used to help position our house to sell. For instance, she is adept at employing the emerging online marketing strategies related to selling homes. Additionally, she increased the strength and personal feel to the narrative describing our home by inviting us to help craft it. Finally, Nikki's team is like her~ each member is committed, focused, respectful, kind and highly relational. They were fun to be around; a rarity when selling a home. We had multiple offers and sold quickly! From start to finish Nikki Lagouros exceeded our expectations. We encourage anyone looking to sell (in Brambleton especially) to consider her as well!

We were looking for a realtor that truly understood our local market, and could help us navigate the home sale process. Well, we discovered that they don’t call Nikki “The Best Reston Agent” for no reason! She made some recommendations for a few updates. She then provided us with trusted contacts to take care of everything for us. We appreciated that she even had someone on her team to handle everything with our HOA, and to help stage our home! The photos were beautiful! We had several offers by day 2 of going live. We feel blessed because Nikki and her team went well above and beyond our expectations. We highly recommend her!

When you don't know anyone in the area, you hope to find someone as great as Nikki. I had to quickly get from TX to VA to take care of family matters and part of that was unexpectedly selling a family home. I'm a particular person when it comes to getting results, so after putting out an agent form in local Reston groups, getting tons of submissions, and narrowing it down to 5 interviews, I was happy to encounter Nikki. Her degrees in Consumer Psychology and Marketing sold me. As much I appreciate over-communication, I appreciate results more - and she made it happen. We were thrilled with the outcome, the multiple offers, and the ease that she created for us since we had to be back in Texas before the home even hit the market. She, Laura, and George took care of everything in a timely manner, keeping me updated on relevant changes, and providing all the info upfront so I could make a decision quickly without having to ask additional questions. She's #1 for a reason. Her strategy is top notch, her staging is stunning, and her recommendations are trustworthy. I'll recommend her to anyone I know needing an agent in the area. Thank you for being amazing, Nikki.

Working with Nikki was nothing short of amazing 🙌 From day one, her knowledge and guidance were unmatched. We originally planned to buy new construction in Woodbridge, but decided to wait and purchase locally in the Springfield/Alexandria area later this year—and Nikki supported us every step of the way. Even in a short time, she proved she truly cares and always puts her clients first 💯 Come August… we’re coming back and closing our dream home with her 🏡✨ Stay tuned 👀 And thank you, Nikki—we’re blessed to have found you!

We cannot say enough great things about Nikki and her team! From initial contact all the way through signing closing documents and receiving our keys, Nikki was fantastic in our home buying journey. She took the time to listen to every single concern, no matter how small. As we were new to the area, she patiently showed us not only property listings, but the highlights that the various neighborhoods had to offer. When it came time to put in an offer, Nikki ensured we stayed competitive the whole way through, fighting for us (oh, and we got the house). Call Nikki!! You will not regret it.
