Quick Answer: How Do People Commute From Woodbridge?

Last updated October 2026

Quick answer: most Woodbridge-area commuters use one of four options. VRE trains run weekdays from the Woodbridge and Rippon stations to Alexandria, Crystal City and Union Station. OmniRide express buses leave from commuter lots in Dale City, Lake Ridge, Montclair and the Stonebridge garage for the Pentagon, Navy Yard and downtown, and OmniRide Local buses are fare-free until June 2027. Slugging (casual carpooling) fills cars at commuter lots so drivers can use the I-95 Express Lanes toll-free with three or more people. Everyone else drives I-95, Route 1 or the Prince William Parkway. Two construction zones matter now: the Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road interchange, with left-turn detours since September 2026, and the I-95 and Route 123 interchange.

VRE: Woodbridge vs. Rippon

Both stations are on VRE’s Fredericksburg Line, which runs weekdays only and does not operate on federal holidays (timetable effective March 16, 2026).

  • Woodbridge station (1040 Express Way) is shared with Amtrak and has a parking garage. It is the closest station for most of Lake Ridge, Occoquan and Belmont Bay. On the weekday schedule summarized in Nikki’s Lake Ridge guide, trains that run through to Union Station take about 52 minutes and Crystal City is about 36 minutes away.
  • Rippon station (15511 Farm Creek Drive) sits near Neabsco Regional Park and serves Rippon Landing, Dale City and the Route 1 corridor, with free parking.
  • Potomac Shores station is not open. Its parking garage is built, the Station House broke ground in November 2024, and VRE lists the station as in Final Design. See the development tracker.

Schedules change; check VRE schedules before you buy a ticket.

OmniRide Buses

OmniRide, run by the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, operates the area’s commuter and local buses:

  • Express (commuter): Routes 971 and 972 from Dale City, 981 from Lake Ridge, 952 and 953 from Montclair, and 563 from the Stonebridge garage to the Navy Yard.
  • Metro Express: Route 95 connects Dale City and Woodbridge with the Franconia-Springfield Metro station.
  • East-West Express: Route 96 links the Stonebridge garage and the Manassas area via the Prince William Parkway.
  • Local: Routes 51, 52, 53, 91, 92, 93 and 94, fare-free until June 2027, plus on-demand microtransit in some zones.

Proposed changes: OmniRide proposes discontinuing Route 51 and shortening Route 94 to run between NOVA-Woodbridge and Tackett’s Mill, with microtransit replacing the Rippon segment. The public hearing was held October 15, 2026 at the Stonebridge parking garage, and written comments closed at 5 p.m. on October 22, 2026. These are proposals only, and no decision has been posted. Slugging: The Commute Locals Explain to Newcomers

Slugging is the region’s casual carpool. Drivers who want to use the Express Lanes toll-free pick up enough riders at a commuter lot or slug line to reach three people, and riders get a free trip to a common destination. OmniRide describes it this way: no money changes hands, the driver gets a faster trip and passengers ride free. Lines form at local commuter lots in the morning and at drop-off points near major job centers in D.C. and Northern Virginia in the afternoon. Etiquette and current line locations are posted on the community-run sites linked from OmniRide’s slugging page.

Driving: I-95, the Express Lanes and the Local Roads

  • 95 Express Lanes: reversible tolled lanes; tolls change with traffic. Carpools of three or more ride free with an E-ZPass Flex set to HOV mode. Check direction and toll prices on expresslanes.com.
  • Route 1 parallels I-95 through Woodbridge and Dumfries.
  • Prince William Parkway (Route 294) connects Woodbridge, Dale City and Lake Ridge with Manassas.
  • Route 123 crosses the Occoquan into Fairfax County at Occoquan and Lake Ridge.

Construction Detours to Know (October 2026)

Prince William Parkway at Minnieville Road: since late September 2026 most left turns at this intersection have been restricted for interchange construction. Eastbound Minnieville drivers heading north on the Parkway use Amethyst Avenue and Quartz Avenue; westbound Minnieville drivers heading south use Elm Farm Road and a temporary detour road. The interchange is scheduled to open to traffic in winter 2028. Detour maps.

I-95 and Route 123 (Exit 160): VDOT is rebuilding ramps and the southbound I-95 bridge over Occoquan Road. Southbound work is scheduled through late 2027 and the full project through late 2028, with periodic Occoquan Road closures. Check 511 Virginia.

Choosing a Home Around Your Commute

  • If you plan to ride VRE, compare drive times to the Woodbridge and Rippon stations from the exact address, and remember there is no weekend service.
  • If you plan to ride OmniRide, find the nearest commuter lot and the route that serves your office.
  • If you plan to slug, ask which lots have active lines at the hours you need.
  • If you will drive, try the trip at rush hour before you make an offer.

Nikki can map commute options for any home you are considering. Compare communities in the Woodbridge community comparison.
