The W&OD Trail Bridge Over Sterling Boulevard

Under construction. Loudoun County is building a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that will carry the W&OD Trail over Sterling Boulevard (Route 846) and remove the current at-grade crossing, which the county says sees about 2,000 crossings a day. Beginning the week of Aug. 10, 2026, all trail traffic moved to new connector trails on both sides of Sterling Boulevard, crossing at the existing crosswalk, and that temporary layout stays until the bridge is done. NOVA Parks says completion is planned for spring 2028 and the trail stays open, with lane shifts and flagging on Sterling Boulevard while crews work. Funding comes from general obligation bonds, cash proffers and local tax funding. Questions: 703-737-8624.

Route 7 Eastbound: A Fourth Lane to Route 28

In design. The county project extends the eastbound merge lane on Route 7 from the Loudoun County Parkway entrance ramp to the Route 28 exit ramp, creating four continuous lanes between the two interchanges. The project page lists the current phase as 60% design, with right-of-way and utility work from summer 2026 to summer 2027 and construction from fall 2027 to spring 2029. Comments can be sent to county staff at any time through the project’s online form.

Sidewalks and Trails in Sterling Neighborhoods

Loudoun County’s Sidewalk and Trail Program fills missing links, with priority on connections to the W&OD Trail and the Silver Line. Sterling-area projects listed in October 2026:

  • Cascades Parkway (Victoria Station Drive/Loudoun Park Lane to Nokes Boulevard/Potomac View Road), in design: design public hearing Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Park View High School cafeteria, 400 W. Laurel Avenue; online comments through Nov. 6.
  • East Maple Avenue (Enterprise Street to South Sterling Boulevard), under construction: estimated completion fall 2026.
  • Church Road (Magnolia Road to West Holly Avenue), in design: phase completion FY 2028.
  • Sterling Boulevard (W&OD Trail to Shaw Road), in design: phase completion FY 2029.
  • Potomac View Road (Cascades Parkway to the First Baptist Church driveway), in design: phase completion FY 2027.
  • Route 7 and Countryside Boulevard shared-use paths, planning: phase completion FY 2028.

Loudoun County’s fiscal year runs July through June, so FY 2027 ends in June 2027.

Dulles Airport: Runway Work Through November 2026

Temporary. Loudoun County said on Sept. 25, 2026 that maintenance on Dulles Airport’s center north-south runway is diverting flights to the other two north-south runways through at least November 2026, so neighborhoods around the airport may notice more aircraft than usual. MWAA says the flights follow approved FAA flight paths. Concerns go to MWAA’s Noise Information Office at 703-417-1204. More in Living near Dulles Airport in Sterling.

Kincora’s Science Center and Dulles Town Center

Northern Virginia Science Center, under construction: the 70,000-square-foot museum on donated land at Kincora reached its topping out on Nov. 12, 2025. Its foundation says the building is scheduled for completion in 2026, with doors expected to open to the public in 2027. See Living in Kincora.

Dulles Town Center, under evaluation: Comstock Holding Companies took over day-to-day management of the 1.4 million-square-foot mall on May 1, 2026 and says it will advise the owner, Virginia Investment Properties, on redevelopment options. We found no rezoning application on file as of October 15, 2026.

Data Center Rules: Under Review Through 2027

Under study. Loudoun County counted about 233 existing data center buildings as of March 1, 2026, ended by-right data center development in 2025, and now requires a special exception with a public hearing for new data centers. Its Data Center Standards and Locations project is expected to finish in spring or summer 2027. Check any address on the county’s map of existing and proposed data centers.

How to Read a Status Label

  • Planning: the project is identified and funded for study; details can change.
  • In design: engineering plans are being drawn, often with a public hearing; right-of-way and utility work follow.
  • Under construction: crews are on site; expect lane shifts and detours.
  • Under study or evaluation: a policy review or private study with no approved project yet.
  • Temporary: a short-term change with a stated end date.
  • Complete: adopted or finished.

Schedules shift; check the official page before relying on a date.
