The Four Lakes at a Glance
- Lake Anne: the lake at Reston’s first village, wrapped by Lake Anne Plaza, the Heron House tower and some of Reston’s oldest clusters. The plaza hosts the Saturday farmers market and summer Sunset Concerts.
- Lake Thoreau: in south Reston beside South Lakes Village Center, with lakefront single-family homes on streets such as Purple Beech Drive and a pathway around much of the shore.
- Lake Audubon: about 44 acres, bordered by the Walker Nature Center’s 72-acre woodland.
- Lake Newport: in north Reston beside Brown’s Chapel Park, with Lake Newport Pool nearby.

Lake Rules: Swimming, Ice and Boats
Can you swim in Reston’s lakes? Officially, no. Reston Association prohibits swimming in all four lakes, which are managed stormwater lakes. Locals will tell you plenty of people take a dip anyway on hot summer days, but it’s against the rules, so if you want to swim, Reston’s 15 RA pools are the way to go. (RA lake swimming FAQ)
- Ice: ice skating, ice fishing and walking on frozen lakes are prohibited because ice thickness varies and is not monitored.
- Hand-carried boats (kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, pedal boats, inflatables, sailboards): need a General Lake Access Permit, a red sticker that is free for RA members and not available to non-members.
- Pontoon and deck boats: need a mooring permit, checked each year.
- Motors: no gas motors; electric motors are allowed.
- Fishing: allowed for RA members and guests under RA’s rules.

Buying on or Near a Reston Lake
Short answer: “lakefront,” “lake view” and “lake access” mean different things in Reston, so ask precise questions.
- Ask whether the lot touches the water or whether RA common land sits between the yard and the shore.
- Ask whether a dock, boat or mooring permit transfers, and confirm it with RA.
- Expect RA design review for anything you build near the water, including tree removal.
- Visit on a summer weekend and again in winter: leaf-off season shows the true view and how visible the home is from the pathways.
