Quick Answer: How Do People Commute From Manassas?

Last updated October 15, 2026

Quick answer: by train or by I-66. The VRE Manassas Line stops at Broad Run, the downtown Manassas depot and Manassas Park on weekdays only; the first northbound train leaves Manassas at 5:09 a.m. and reaches Union Station at 6:20 a.m. Drivers use I-66, where the 66 Express Lanes run from Route 29 in Gainesville to the Beltway with free trips for HOV-3+ carpools with an E-ZPass Flex, or Route 28 north toward Centreville and Dulles. In our October 2026 test from the downtown depot around 4 p.m., Dulles Airport was about 33 minutes away and the Pentagon about 58 minutes using the Express Lanes.

The Manassas Line has three stops in the Manassas area, listed by VRE as:

  • Broad Run: 10637 Piper Lane, Bristow. Free surface parking. End of the line.
  • Manassas: 9451 West St., at the historic downtown depot. Free surface parking, and a garage with a valid permit.

Weekday schedule: seven northbound trains leave Broad Run between 5:01 a.m. and 8:01 a.m., plus one afternoon train at 3:28 p.m. The 5:09 a.m. train from Manassas reaches Alexandria at 5:55 and Union Station at 6:20. Trains 332 and 334 end at Alexandria, where riders can switch to Metro. Southbound, afternoon and evening trains leave Union Station from 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; the last one reaches Manassas at 8:09 p.m. A single early train leaves Union Station at 6:35 a.m. for Manassas.

No weekend service: VRE runs weekdays only and does not run on federal holidays, and it runs an “S” schedule on some holidays and bad-weather days. For Oct. 19 to 23, 2026, VRE posted a modified schedule because Amtrak work will cut access to Union Station. Check Schedules before you ride.

Coming up: VRE plans to shift the Broad Run platform east and enlarge the train yard, with construction listed from December 2026 to February 2029. See the development tracker.

Driving: I-66 and the 66 Express Lanes

The 66 Express Lanes Outside the Beltway run 22.5 miles alongside three regular lanes between I-495 and Route 29 in Gainesville, and they fully opened in November 2022. Tolls change with demand, and vehicles with three or more people ride free with an E-ZPass Flex. Inside the Beltway, I-66 between I-495 and Route 29 in Rosslyn operates as express lanes on weekdays from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. eastbound and 3 to 7 p.m. westbound. These lanes are part of Northern Virginia’s 94-mile express lanes network. Sources: 66 Express Lanes and 66 Express Outside the Beltway FAQs.

Route 28 Toward Centreville and Dulles

Route 28 runs through downtown Manassas and north toward Centreville, Chantilly and Dulles Airport. In Fairfax County, Route 28 was widened from four to six lanes between the Bull Run bridge and Route 29, with substantial completion celebrated on November 1, 2023. On the Prince William County side, the county removed the planned Route 28 Bypass and, on January 20, 2026, adopted a plan to widen Route 28 from four to six lanes between the Manassas city line and the Fairfax County line; no construction schedule has been published. In the city, a two-lane roundabout is under construction at Sudley Road, Centreville Road and Prescott Avenue, so expect work zones there.

Closer to home, the city-owned Washington Manassas Airport (HEF), formerly Manassas Regional Airport, received its FAA Part 139 commercial operating certificate on August 31, 2026; the airport says passenger service is expected to launch by the end of 2027. Until airlines are announced, it serves general aviation. HEF Earns FAA Part 139 Certification.

Choosing a Home Around Your Commute

  • Train commuters: compare walking or driving distance to the Manassas, Manassas Park and Broad Run stations, and check parking at your likely departure time.
  • I-66 drivers: look at how you reach I-66 and whether you will carpool for free Express Lane trips.
  • Route 28 drivers: drive the route at rush hour, and follow the city roundabout and the county widening plan.
  • Jurisdiction still matters: commute aside, the city, Manassas Park and county have different taxes and services. See City of Manassas vs. a Manassas address.
