Quick Answer: Is a Herndon Address in the Town of Herndon?
Last updated October 2026
Quick answer: a “Herndon, VA” mailing address does not tell you which local government you live under. The Town of Herndon is an incorporated town inside Fairfax County, with its own council, police, trash collection, zoning and historic district. Many homes outside the town limits, in Fairfax County communities such as Oak Hill, McNair, Floris, Franklin Farm and Fox Mill, also use Herndon addresses and are governed by the County alone. Town homes pay a Town real estate tax of $0.27 per $100 of assessed value for fiscal 2027 on top of the County’s $1.12. The reliable test is the tax record: look the address up on Fairfax County’s iCARE site.

One Name, Two Kinds of Herndon
The Town of Herndon was incorporated in 1879 and covers about four square miles around its historic downtown; the Town says it has more than 24,000 residents and is the third-largest town in Virginia. Town residents are also Fairfax County residents, so they live under two local governments at once.
Outside the town limits, “Herndon” is mostly a postal name. ZIP codes 20170 and 20171 both include Fairfax County addresses beyond the Town, from Oak Hill, McNair and Floris to Franklin Farm, Fox Mill and much of the Route 28 corridor. Frying Pan Farm Park, for example, has a Herndon address but is a Fairfax County park outside the Town. In those neighborhoods, the County handles everything the Town would otherwise do.

The example uses base rates only; County special district levies can apply to either kind of address, so check the actual bill for the parcel. Assessment, payment and tax relief questions go to the Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration.

How to Check a Parcel in Five Minutes
- Search the address on Fairfax County’s iCARE site and open the parcel’s tax details. A Town parcel carries the Town of Herndon real estate tax in addition to the County’s.
- Ask the seller or listing agent for the most recent real estate tax bill and compare the line items.
- Still unsure? Ask the Town’s Community Development staff. Through January 2, 2027, the counter is at 397 Herndon Parkway, Suite 100; the Town’s main number is 703-435-6800.
