A name a lot of Northern Virginia grew up with

Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy in 2017, and the old Fair Lakes store closed nearly a decade ago. For years, the closest thing to it around here was a memory. Now the brand is back in a smaller format, with two Fairfax County stores in its holiday rollout.

120 new standalone stores are opening across the U.S. this holiday season, for 160 total including 40 pop-ups inside Macy’s.

Where the two stores are

The Springfield Town Center store opened September 23. The Fair Oaks Mall store is taking over the Go! Calendars, Games and Toys space, which was still open but clearing inventory when FFXnow visited the week of October 20. No opening date has been given beyond “soon.”

Both stores take over spaces recently run by Go! Retail Group, which has partnered with Toys R Us on the expansion. A spokesperson for EJ Media Group, which represents the brand, confirmed to FFXnow that both locations are permanent.

Why the stores are smaller

Do not expect the giant boxes of the 1980s and 1990s. The new stores have a much smaller footprint, and no square footage has been published. Expect current toy brands and movie tie-ins, such as Pokemon, LEGO and K-Pop Demon Hunters, per FFXnow.

Mikia Ross Wilson, senior marketing director at Springfield Town Center, told FFXnow that “a whole generation grew up with Toys R Us,” and that the return gives those shoppers a place to bring their own kids.

What this means for Fairfax County homeowners

Retail like this is a small but real part of how a neighborhood feels day to day. Springfield Town Center is a short drive for Burke and Springfield, and Fair Oaks sits along the Route 50 corridor that Oakton and Fairfax neighbors know well. From Reston, the Fairfax County Parkway gets you to Fair Oaks without much trouble outside rush hour.

If you are weighing those parts of the county, the Burke neighborhood guide, Oakton neighborhood guide and Fairfax guide compare the areas, and the Fairfax home value tool gives current owners a quick estimate.

Sources and reporting limits

Figures are current as of October 22, 2026. Store size, hours and the Fair Oaks Mall opening date were not published. The permanent-store statement applies to the two Fairfax County locations. Check the mall websites before visiting.
