Marine Corps Base Quantico: The Basics
Marine Corps Base Quantico is a Marine Corps installation along the Potomac River whose land extends from southern Prince William County into northern Stafford County and eastern Fauquier County, according to the Navy’s environmental restoration program. Its Main Gate is the Fuller Road Gate off Route 1 and I-95.
Getting on base: the base uses DBIDS, the Defense Department’s identity and access system. Everyone entering needs DoD credentials or an authorized visitor pass. Visitors without credentials get passes at the Visitor Control Center, 27190 Russell Road, Stafford, VA 22554 (I-95 Exit 148), open Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., and closed Sundays and federal holidays (703-784-3023). Check the base access pages before your first visit.
The small incorporated Town of Quantico sits on the river inside the base; Nikki has a separate page on Quantico.
Communities Near the Base
Nikki does not steer buyers toward or away from any neighborhood. What changes from one area to the next is mostly government, associations and roads:
- Town of Dumfries: incorporated, on Route 1 just north of Triangle; town police, Wednesday trash pickup and a town real estate tax on top of the county rate.
- Triangle (22172): unincorporated Prince William County around the Route 1 and Joplin Road corridor, home to the entrances to the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Prince William Forest Park.
- Montclair (22025): a lake community off Route 234 with a property owners association ($900 a year for 2026-2027); the MPOA describes it as less than a 30-minute drive from the base.
- Potomac Shores (22026): a newer master-planned community on the Potomac, east of Route 1; its VRE station is not open.
- Stafford County: the base’s southern neighbor,, with its own county government and school system.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps, at 1775 Semper Fidelis Way in Triangle, is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Its galleries follow the Corps from the American Revolution through the World Wars, Korea and Vietnam.
Prince William Forest Park, next door at 18170 Park Entrance Road off Joplin Road, is a National Park Service site of about 15,000 acres with 37 miles of trails. The NPS issues a free entrance pass to qualifying U.S. military veterans and Gold Star Family members who bring valid ID, and current U.S. military members and dependents qualify for a free America the Beautiful military annual pass.

Relocating to Quantico: What to Check
- Plan around PCS timing: line up inspections, appraisal and closing dates with your report date, and build in time for base access if you are new to Quantico.
- Read association rules on leasing: if you might rent the home after your next move, check the HOA or POA covenants and any sub-association rules on leasing before you buy.
- Know which government serves the address: Town of Dumfries homes pay a town real estate tax due June 5 and December 5 on top of the county rate; see town vs. county address.
- Check flood zones and road plans: look up the FEMA flood map, and note the planned Route 1 widening if you are buying along Fraley Boulevard or Main Street.
- Confirm schools for the exact address: use the PWCS Find Your School tool, or Stafford County Public Schools for Stafford addresses.
