Winter Fun in Reston
There is no need to hibernate during the cold winter months when you live in Reston. With a variety of fun indoor and outdoor activities available around town, you’re sure to stay busy and entertained no matter what the weather.
Ice Skating
Reston residents have a choice of two ice skating facilities, the outdoor Reston Pavilion or SkateQuest Reston, an indoor ice rink.
The Ice Skating Pavilion at Reston Town Center is open daily for skating through March 10, 2019. Hours: Sundays to Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Admission: adults, $10; youth, senior, military, $9; skate rental, $6.
SkateQuest is open year round and offers skating lessons, hockey, birthday parties, and refreshments at the SkateQuest Café. Public skating is available Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., Friday evenings 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. featuring a DJ and light show, Saturdays 1:10 p.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays 3:10 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. Admission: adults, $8; children, $7; skate rental, $4.
Theater and Art
Warm up indoors with the Reston Community Players, now in their 52nd season. All productions are at the Reston Community Center’s CenterStage, located in Hunters Woods Village Center. Check out a show, audition for an upcoming production, or volunteer.
If you’re interested in checking out fine art, visit the Greater Reston Art Center, located in Reston Town Center. GRACE features a variety of exhibitions, classes, workshops, and events for all ages.
For a hands-on art experience, sign up for one of several upcoming Paint Nights at Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Reston. These two-hour sessions cost $45, which covers paint, canvas, supplies and instruction. Food and beverages sold separately.
Nature in Winter
Hike the trails at Walker Nature Center to observe birds and animals, check out a film like Evolution of Organic (Jan. 25) or Birds of Prey (Feb. 22), or join in on an activity for kids and adults. Visit the Nature House for exhibitions, programs, and displays. Open Mondays and Wednesdays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sundays 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Visit DC museums
The winter months are an ideal time to go museum hopping in Washington, DC, when attractions tend to be less crowded. Take your pick from 17 Smithsonian museums including the Air and Space Museum, the American Indian Museum, with its award-winning Mitsitam Café, the Portrait Gallery, and the Natural History Museum. Animal lovers can bundle up and check out the National Zoo, which is open daily weather permitting.
